PART 3: TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW

1. Learn the Technologies

Whether you are taking a fully online course or a hybrid course, you will most likely use some or all of the following technologies:

2. D2L Brightspace

D2L Brightspace is the learning management system used at TTC for online, hybrid, and traditional courses. This is where students can access course materials, submit assignments, participate in discussions, take assessments, and access grades for their courses.

More information on D2L Brightspace can be found inside the learning management system under the Student Videos and User Guides links.

All students have access to their D2L Brightspace courses one week before the start of the term.

When taking an online course, most students log into D2L Brightspace daily to check for course updates. Since many instructors post announcements within their D2L Brightspace courses, it is important that you check your courses frequently.

How to Access D2L Brightspace

D2L Brightspace may be accessed:

  1. Via the my.tridenttech.edu Student Portal, using the available links inside the "Access My Courses (D2L)" widget.
  2. Via the direct link, https://onlcourses.tridenttech.edu/

3. Turnitin

Turnitin is the leading originality checking and plagiarism prevention service used by millions of students and faculty, and thousands of institutions worldwide. Turnitin encourages best practices for using and citing other people's written material.

Turnitin is integrated through TTC’s D2L Brightspace Assignments tool. When you submit assignment files, you normally receive the Originality or Similarity Report and many instructors use Turnitin’s electronic GradeMark feature for their online grading purposes.

4. Respondus LockDown Browser & Respondus Monitor

Respondus LockDown Browser (RLDB) is a customized browser that increases the security of test delivery in D2L Brightspace. When students use Respondus LockDown Browser to access an online quiz, they are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications.

Respondus Monitor is a companion application for Respondus LockDown Browser that uses webcam and video technology to prevent cheating during online quizzes. Respondus Monitor is often required for non-proctored testing environments.

If your instructor requires Respondus LockDown Browser, you will need to download and install the free plug-in so you can take the online quiz, and possibly to review your results.

After you download the plug-in, you will need to install or run the application file. Please use the Student Quick Start Guide below if your instructor requires Respondus LockDown Browser and/or Respondus Monitor to take online quizzes and review your results.

5. Honorlock

Honorlock provides online testing proctoring services. Whenever it is time to take your online test, whether at lunchtime or in the middle of the night, you can log in and begin your proctored session. You do not need to worry about scheduling a proctored time for your online test or paying for a missed timeslot. Honorlock uses AI technology to monitor your online test live, and their certified online test proctors review the test recording. They then send reports of any incidents to your instructor along with the recordings to review as needed.

With Honorlock, you do not have to download any programs because their proctoring software is fully online. You only need to install the Google Chrome extension to get started. While you are taking your online test, Honorlock uses your microphone and webcam to record you. It also prevents you from accessing another browser window or your smartphone. If Honorlock notices an extra person in your room, a live proctor will pop in to check on you. They will help you get back on track with your online exam.

If your instructor requires Honorlock for online testing, visit the link below to prepare for your proctored session.

6. Virtual Classroom & Video Assignments

Virtual Classroom is an integrated web conferencing tool by Bongo. It helps instructors engage students in two-way video conversations. Virtual Classroom allows live video sessions to run inside of D2L Brightspace. Instructors can schedule live discussions, office hours, or video-based teaching. Video sessions can be automatically recorded and seamlessly embedded alongside other learning materials.

Video Assignments are structured workflows that students complete asynchronously. Instructors leverage these workflows to create experiential exercises where students demonstrate skills and apply knowledge within a real-world context. After a student completes a Video Assignment, they submit their recording for personalized coaching and feedback from their instructor and peers.

If your instructor requires Virtual Classroom or Video Assignments, please use the Bongo’s Knowledge Base Support Site below for instructions, requirements, and troubleshooting.

WebEx is a web and video conferencing software package that integrates with the college's learning management system, D2L Brightspace. With the WebEx Education Connector, you can communicate and share files with your instructor and classmates all from one location. You will also be able to attend live lectures as a remote student, participate in class discussions, have meetings, and schedule an appointment with your instructor. WebEx allows your instructor to host online, Virtual Meetings with HD video, audio, and screen sharing. You can attend these lectures in real time, as well as review recorded sessions of past Virtual Meetings.

If your instructor uses the WebEx Classroom Collaboration feature, you will be expected to work in teams with your classmates by conducting messaging, sharing files, whiteboarding, and calling. With the messaging capabilities of this feature, you can work with your classmates from anywhere.

If your instructor uses the WebEx Office Hours feature, you will be able to schedule an online appointment to meet one-on-one from anywhere. After you request an available time, your scheduled appointment session will appear listed with the rest of your Virtual Meetings.

8. my.tridenttech.edu

TTC uses my.tridenttech.edu to communicate college information with students. It is highly important that you check the Student Portal at least once a day, as this is the first line of communication that is used by the college.

If you are taking a course that uses D2L Brightspace (TTC's learning management system), your course email will be sent to you there.
